NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University was honored with a pair of Co-Athletes of the Week by Conference USA this week. Junior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) shared honors for men's track, while sophomore Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) was the co-winner for men's tennis.
Kandie, the only Tulane track athlete to travel to the Stanford Relays, made the trip worthwhile. The junior, who finished third at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, won the event at Stanford, with a school record time of 8:39.21, defeating 48 other runners. His time is an automatic qualifying time for this year's NCAA Championships.
Romero had a strong week for the Green Wave tennis team, which went 2-1, including a defeat of No. 47 Tulsa. Romero, who is unranked, lost his first match of the week, but it was a hard-fought, 6-2, 6-4 decision to Arkansas' Oskar Johansson, the No. 1 ranked player in the nation. The sophomore came back to post straight set wins in matches against Tulsa and Wichita State. He also teamed with Jorge Lievano to go 2-0 in doubles play for the week (doubles were not played against Arkansas due to weather). Romero is now 12-3 in singles and 10-4 in doubles in his debut season for the Green Wave, which is ranked No. 43 in the nation.
The Green Wave men's and women's outdoor track teams will host the Tulane Invitational this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The event will be held at Tad Gormley Stadium. The Green Wave men's tennis team hosts Louisiana-Lafayette Thursday at 5 p.m. at Goldring Tennis Complex. The Wave is also in action on Saturday, hosting Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Tulane as the seniors from the men's and women's tennis teams will be recognized.
