Green Wave Ranks
May 1, 2001
According to a recent article in the national publication The Sporting News, Tulane's athletic department ranks No. 1 in Conference USA and 53rd nationally in their evaluation of the 115 schools that play both Division I men's basketball and Division I-A football.
The rankings were based on four factors: the records of each school's football and men's basketball team for the last completed season (2000 football, 1999-2000 basketball), the most recent graduation rates for men's basketball and football players, the support the teams receive from the administration and the fans, and the ethics of the department, including overall graduation rates and gender equity.
Based on these factors, Tulane was ranked 53rd nationally among 115 programs, behind national leaders Stanford (rated the No. 1 department), Michigan State (2), North Carolina (3) and Notre Dame (4), but ahead of such notables as Oklahoma (62), LSU (63), Texas A&M (71), Alabama (78) and Arizona State (78), as well as the leader among all C-USA schools.
The Green Wave received an "A" grade from the magazine for its graduation rate and a "B-" score for "playing fair".
