Berkowitz, Buff Named Scholar Athletes of the Year

NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane baseball player Jared Berkowitz and women's golfer Pam Buff were selected as the athletic department's Scholar Athletes of the Year. The awards were presented at Tulane's university-wide awards ceremony.
Berkowitz, a 6-foot, senior, pitcher from Scottsdale, Ariz., is the winningest pitcher in Tulane baseball history. Over his four-year career, Berkowitz has won 35 games and holds the school records for career starts (58) and innings pitched (403.2). The left-hander's .760 winning percentage ranks third all-time.
An exercise science major, Berkowitz has a record of 12-2 this season with a 3.33 earned run average. He was an all-conference and all-NCAA Regional selection as a junior. Berkowitz is a member of Kappa Delta Phi honor society for loyalty and service and also serves on the Tulane University Joint Hearings Board and Grievance Committee. He also serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and was selected to attend the 1999 NCAA Leadership Conference
Buff, a 5-foot-8, junior, from Duluth, Ga., led the Tulane women's golf team to its first-ever berth in the NCAA East Regional. The three-time Conference USA Player of the Year posted four top-10 finishes and a 77.33 stroke average this season.
A chemical engineering major, Buff was a National Golf Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-America and a member of the all-Scholar Athlete team in 1999. She is a five-time Dean's List honoree, a member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll, and serves as the treasurer of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board.
To earn Tulane Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year accolades, candidates must be an upperclassman with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be a major contributor to his or her team. The Scholar Athlete must also participate in organizations outside of athletics and be involved in community outreach programs.
