NEW ORLEANS, La. - - A total of 92 Tulane student-athletes were named to the Conference USA Academic Honor Roll, with 16 earning the prestigious Commissioner's Academic Medal, the league office announced on Friday.
In addition, women's basketball standout Britt Themann was one of just six student-athletes from across Conference USA to earn one of the league's Postgraduate Scholarships.
A total of 16 Tulane baseball players were named to the C-USA Academic Honor Roll, followed closely by 13 football players and 11 women's soccer players. Perhaps most impressive, however, was the women's golf team, which placed seven of its eight team members on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll. The men's golf team also fared well, with eight of its 11 student-athletes earning a spot on the prestigious academic listing.
The men's golf and women's track and field programs each had three Academic Medal winners, while the baseball, women's basketball, women's soccer and women's tennis team each had two Academic Medal recipients. A student-athlete must compile a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on 4.00 scale to be named to the C-USA Academic Honor Roll. Those student-athletes who post at least a 3.75 cumulative gpa are further awarded the Commissioner's Academic Medal.
Themann, who earned an Academic Medal for the fourth straight year, picked up perhaps the biggest honor when she was selected as the recipient of a $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship from the league office. The award winners were chosen by the Faculty Athletics Representatives of the Conference USA member institutions. Themann recently graduated with a degree in Exercise Sport Science and was a finalist for the prestigious NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship. She completed her basketball career as the Green Wave's all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage.
"I think these academic awards are very indicative of the high quality of student-athletes who attend Tulane," athletic director Rick Dickson said. "They excel both in the classroom and on the playing field and are ideal representatives of Tulane."
