Aug. 1, 2001
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University Director of Athletics Rick Dickson has selected Cynthia Reynolds to serve as assistant athletic director for student services.
Reynolds, who joins Tulane after a stint at Cornell University, will oversee the areas of academic counseling, tutoring, the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and other related areas. In addition, the Green Wave has hired Beth Howland as the senior academic counselor for the department.
"Student services is one of the most important jobs in any athletic department," Dickson said. "Cynthia's experience in academics will be a major asset to Tulane. In addition to assisting student-athletes with their academic performance, she will assist us in upgrading and implementing programs so that all Tulane student-athletes have the best possible college experience."
After 14 years of academic advising in NCAA Division I athletics, she worked for the last year in academic advising for undergraduate biology majors at Cornell University.
Reynolds, who earned her bachelor's degree from Northern Iowa and her master's at Buffalo, began her career in student-athlete advising at the University of Buffalo in 1987. After five years as an academic advisor for Buffalo, she was promoted to associate director in 1993. She held that position until leaving for the University of Michigan in 1997, where she served as the academic coordinator for football for four years. During her time with the Wolverines, she also had a seven-month stint as interim director of academic and support services.
Howland also joins the Wave from Cornell. She has served as the director of student-athlete support services for the last three years with the Big Red. She also was the coordinator of Cornell's NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
A standout athlete at Ithaca College as an undergraduate, Howland led the Bombers to Division III National Championships in women's soccer in 1990 and 1991, earning All-America honors as a goalkeeper both years. She also earned Academic All-America recognition and was inducted into Ithaca's Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
Following her graduation, Howland worked for three years with the Family and Children's Service of Ithaca. She earned her master's degree in sports psychology from Ithaca this past May.
Reynolds and Howland join Tony Bennett and Inem O'Boyle in Tulane's student services department.
