Aug. 9, 1999
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University athletics director Sandy Barbour resigned from the University effective immediately, Tulane President Scott Cowen announced Monday.
"Sandy has made many contributions to the Tulane University Department of Athletics for which we are most grateful," said Cowen. "She is a fine individual and an effective ambassador for the University. Tulane has benefited from her presence."
"I've had a great eight years at Tulane,"said Barbour. "I love the University, but at this time it is in the best interests of both of us to go our separate ways. I am extremely proud of my association with Tulane University. Tulane is a wonderful university with a tremendous academic reputation, and I will always be grateful for the professional opportunities that the University afforded me," she said. Senior associate athletics director Scott Devine has been appointed the interim athletics director.
A national search for a permanent replacement will begin in the next few weeks, said Cowen.
Barbour, 39, was appointed the head of Tulane athletics in 1996. She joined the staff at Tulane in 1991 as an associate athletics director for Kevin White and was subsequently appointed senior associate athletics director in 1994. Barbour was interim athletics director prior to being appointed athletics director. Under her leadership, Tulane won Conference USA season and/or tournament championships in football, women's basketball, women's indoor and outdoor track, and baseball.
As athletics director, Barbour was responsible for a number of milestones in the department, including the development of a new athletics logo, the hiring of football coaches Tommy Bowden and Chris Scelfo, and the department's involvement in working with city officials to help secure special events such as the NCAA men's basketball first and second round tournament games and the women's basketball Final Four for 2004.
Devine has served as Tulane's senior associate athletics director for external affairs since 1995. He joined the University in 1991 as an assistant athletics director for athletic student life. He has a master's degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
"I have great confidence that Scott Devine will continue our progress during this interim time period. He is a seasoned and talented athletics administrator with a deep understanding of Tulane University," said Cowen.
