Three Wave Teams Open 2003 on Gettin' Green Weekend

NEW ORLEANS - Tulane fans will be able to get the 2003-04 sports year off to a fast start on "Gettin' Green Weekend," August 29th through Sept. 1, as the Green Wave volleyball, soccer and football teams all open their 2003 seasons in New Orleans during that three-day period. It's the start of a great year of Tulane Athletics during which fans are encouraged to wear green to every Tulane Athletics home event.
Both the Tulane women's soccer and volleyball teams open the year with home tournaments. Third-year head coach Betsy and Anderson and the Green Wave women's soccer team will play host to the Tulane Invitational on August 29th and August 31st at the Westfeldt Facility behind the James W. Wilson Center. The action starts Friday when Southern Miss takes on Nicholls State at 5 p.m., followed by the Green Wave's season opener versus Southwest Texas State at 7 p.m. On Sunday, August 31st, the Golden Eagles take on Southwest Texas at Noon while Tulane meets Nicholls State at 2:30 p.m. The tournament will mark the debut of 13 Green Wave freshmen.
"We are very excited to be able to host our own tournament this year," said Anderson. "It's the start of a great home schedule for our fans in 2003."
In Fogelman Arena, fifth-year head coach Betsy Becker and her experienced Tulane volleyball squad welcome Elon, Wright State and Nicholls State to New Orleans for the Green Wave/Radisson Inn-vitational August 29th-30th. First serve for the six-match tournament is set for Friday at 5 p.m. when Wright State takes on Elon. At 7 p.m., Tulane will play state rival Nicholls State in their 2003 season opener. Four matches are scheduled for Saturday, August 30th, beginning with Nicholls State and Wright State at 10:30 a.m., followed by Tulane and Elon at Noon. The Phoenix turn right around to play Nicholls State at 5 p.m. in Fogelman, while Tulane and Wright State close out a full day of volleyball action beginning at 7 p.m.
"This tournament is a great way to start 2003," Becker said. "I hope everyone will come out, wear green and support the team during the weekend because it's going to be an exciting season for Tulane volleyball."
The "Gettin' Green Weekend" concludes Monday, Sept. 1 when the Chris Scelfo's Green Wave football team meets defending Conference USA co-champion TCU in the Louisiana Superdome. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. for the nationally-televised (ESPN) contest while outside the Superdome, the "Great to Be Green" Pre-Game Bash gets underway at 3 p.m. featuring live music from Marva Wright and the Radiators, as well as a Second Line parade into the 'Dome.
"The excitement shown by our fans has been at a high level so far going into this season," said head coach Chris Scelfo. "We're looking forward to playing in front of a great home crowd in the Superdome on Sept. 1."
Tickets are available for the 2003 home seasons for Tulane volleyball, soccer and football, as well as for individual contests and tournaments. In addition, catch all the Green Wave action in all three sports, as well as men's and women's basketball and baseball by purchasing a Green Team Book at the MVP or All-Star Level for just $500 or $250, respectively. For just $600, the diehard all-sports Green Wave fan can get the "Ultimate Fan Pack" which consists of one reserved season ticket to football, men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball and one general admission season ticket to soccer and volleyball. The ultimate fan also receives special invitations to be on the field for certain games and an Ultimate Fan jacket.
