Tulane Suspends Intercollegiate Competition
Sept. 12, 2001
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University teams will not participate in intercollegiate athletics competitions for the remainder of the week, including this weekend, in light of the tragic events that took place in the United States Tuesday, TU Director of Athletics Rick Dickson announced Wednesday.
The suspension of competition affects Tulane's women's soccer and volleyball squads. The soccer team was scheduled to fly Thursday to South Carolina for weekend matches with the College of Charleston and University of South Carolina, while the Green Wave volleyball squad was scheduled to participate in the Mortar Board Purdue Premier in West Lafayette, Ind. along with host Purdue, Notre Dame and Indiana State. Tulane's other 14 intercollegiate squads, including the Tulane football team, do not have competitions scheduled this week.
"Out of deference and respect for those affected by the events in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, and in light of the impact this has had on so many people in our nation, on our campus and among our student-athletes, we thought it best to postpone all travel and competition for now," Dickson said. "We want to allow time for grieving and reflection."
Dickson said practical issues, such as travel, security and safety of student-athletes, were also a consideration in his decision to suspend all competition.
"We look forward to resuming normal activities as scheduled when it is appropriate, and when all of the issues have been addressed," Dickson said.
Tulane's next scheduled intercollegiate competition is Monday when the Wave women's golf team is scheduled to begin play in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn. The next scheduled Tulane home event is a volleyball match with South Alabama on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
