Tulane Athletics Certified by NCAA
Dec. 12, 2002
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane Green Wave Department of Athletics has been certified by the NCAA in the Association's second cycle of athletics certification, the NCAA announced last week.
The purpose of athletics certification is to insure integrity in the institution's athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics department. This marks Tulane's second certification since the process was started in 1993.
"We are elated that the certification process has been completed and that Tulane has received the stamp of approval from the Athletics Certification Committee," said Rick Dickson, Tulane Director of Athletics. "It's been a long process involving a large group of people both in the athletic department and across the university. I want to thank everyone who participated in any way."
Tulane's "certified" status means that the institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership, specifically in the areas of governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity, and equity, welfare and sportsmanship.
The notification of Tulane's certification status completes a lengthy process by the entire university that included an 18-month self-study and resulting report turned into the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification in February 2001 and a visit by a peer review team in April of that year. The Division I Committee on Athletics Certification then evaluates all documents and reports and gives the university a year to respond before a final certification decision is rendered.
Tulane Associate Athletics Director Megan Drucker oversaw the completion of the self-study report and the university's response to the committee while serving as the liaison to the group on the athletic department side. Tulane professor Dick Culbertson served as the chairperson of the University's athletics certification committee.
The second round of athletics certification is being completed on a 10-year cycle. All 325 Division I programs that are active division members will participate in the certification process.
