Wave Tennis Teams Earn Preseason Rankings

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team is ranked 47th in the 2001 preseason rankings, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's women's tennis rankings, which were released on Tuesday.
In addition, Green Wave standout Anna Monhartova is ranked 10th in the preseason listing, while junior Joyce Bergman is ranked 82nd. Monhartova's ranking is the highest ever individual listing for a Tulane women's tennis player.
Monhartova posted an impressive 18-4 record during the Fall season, reaching the semifinals of the ITA National Clay Court championships and the Round of 16 at the ITA Riviera All-American championships. Bergman was 6-5 over the Fall, including an impressive win over Mississippi's Mira Radu, who was ranked 44th at the time.
In addition, the men's rankings were listed and reshman Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) has led the Tulane men's tennis team to a No. 44 national ranking.
Kogan is the No. 36 rated individual in the nation following an outstanding fall season, which included a championship in the top flight of the Tulane Invitational and the Tennessee Fall Classic "A" Flight championship. The freshman also upset preseason 10th-ranked player in the nation at the ITA Region III Championships.
The talented freshman also teamed with senior Mikko Viljanen (Helsinki, Finland) to earn a No. 18 ranking in the ITA's doubles standard. The duo combined for an 8-3 mark in doubles action, including wins over five nationally-ranked tandems. The pair won the top flight of the Tennessee Fall Classic and advanced to the semifinals of the National Clay Court Doubles Championship.
Tulane's men's tennis team will open spring action on Jan. 26, playing at Michigan State, followed by a match at Michigan (Jan. 27). The fiirst home match of 2001 will be Feb. 1 against the University of New Orleans.
The Green Wave women's team kicks off the 2001 dual match season on Feb. 3 at home against Penn State.
