Byron Ellis started his second stint with the Tulane football team as the Chief of Staff in 2024. He is a seasoned professional that has been involved in football administration for over 20 years.
Ellis arrived at Tulane for the second time after working for the last eight years at Ball State University in the football administration role of General Manager. He originally arrived at BSU in 2016 as the Director of Football Administration/Chief of Staff before earning the promotion to General Manager in 2022.
In addition to his primary role with the Cardinals, Ellis also was selected for national leadership duties with the American Football Coaches Association, named to the National Football Operations Committee in April of 2022 where he represents Mid-American Conference football administrators and operations personnel on the national level.
He was recognized for outstanding contribution at Ball State, receiving the program’s 12th Man of the Year Award in 2020 as testament to dedication and impact on the university during the Cardinals’ MAC championship season while under the cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously Ellis worked for four years at Tulane as the Director of Football Operations from 2011-2015
In his previous role he was responsible for all phases of the football team travel, management of the team’s pre-season camp, the student volunteer program for Tulane football and the day-to-day operations of the football program. He also assisted with the organization of Tulane’s recruiting efforts and with the Green Wave Football Summer Camps.
Prior to Tulane, Ellis was the director of football operations for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League from 2011-12. He facilitated and supervised all administrative functions of the football operations department and also oversaw team travel, player housing, player transactions player contracts and player payroll.
Before Omaha, Ellis served as the UFL’s Director of Football Administration for the league office from 2010-11 and was the point man for football operations for two teams, while assisting with three other organizations.
From 2006-08, Ellis was the football operations supervisor for the Arena Football League’s New Orleans VooDoo, where he managed junior staff members, practice schedules, free agent visits, daily transactions, team travel, and was the New Orleans operational liaison for the Arena Bowls XXI and XXII. His group was voted the “2008 AFL Support Staff of the Year” by his peers.
Ellis worked in various capacities with the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans VooDoo from 2004-06.
A native of Baton Rouge, Ellis earned his bachelor’s degree in coaching and sports administration from Southern Miss in 2003.
