Last Week
Both teams played road games, as
Tulane was defeated by No. 19
Syracuse, 47-17, and Ole Miss downed
South Carolina, 36-10.
Coaches
Chris Scelfo (NLU, 1981) is 3-2 in
his first full season at Tulane. He
led the Green Wave to a 41-27
Liberty Bowl win over BYU last year
in his TU debut.
Ole Miss' David Cutcliffe (Alabama, '76) is 5-1 in his first full season as the Rebels' head coach.
Series
Ole Miss leads the all-time series,
39-28, which began in 1893. The
Rebels have won seven consecutive
meetings in the series, including a
41-24 win in New Orleans on Nov. 15,
1997, the last time these two teams
met.
Tulane's last win in the series came on Nov. 5, 1988, a 14-9 decision in Oxford.

The Skinny
The Green Wave plays its second
consecutive game away from home, as
the squad travels to Oxford, Miss.,
for a game with Ole Miss. Today's
game is Homecoming on the Ole Miss
campus.
A Return to SEC Competition
Ole Miss is Tulane's only SEC foe
on the schedule this season. It is
also Tulane's first game against an
SEC opponent since these two schools
met back in November of 1997.
Last season marked the first time since the SEC was formed in 1933 that the Wave had not faced at least one SEC school, and the first time it went an entire season without facing a school currently in the SEC since 1918.
Ramsey Piling Up Passing Yards
Sophomore QB Patrick Ramsey
continues to post prodigious
numbers. Against Syracuse, Ramsey
completed 26-of-53 passes for 342
yards. The 53 attempts were the
second-most in school history.
It was his third straight 300-yard passing game this season, and moved his season total to 1,389 yards.
It continued a string of outstanding performances for the Ruston, La., native, as he passed for a school-record 404 yards against SMU in his first home start, then followed that performance with a even better 447-yard day against Army.
In two home games, Ramsey has completed 66-of-98 passes (.673) for 851 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions.
Ramsey is the first player in the 106-year history of Tulane football to pass for more than 400 yards in a single game. He broke the previous record of 388 set by Terrence Jones against TCU in 1986.
National Leaders
QB Patrick Ramsey leads the nation
in total offense (353.3 ypg) and
ranks 30th in pass efficiency
(136.3).
His primary target, WR JaJuan Dawson currently ranks second nationally with 11.0 receptions per game and third nationally with 133.5 yards per game. He is the Conference USA leader in both categories.
WR Adrian Burnette currently ranks sixth nationally with 114.0 receiving yards per game.
Tulane Hot at Home
With convincing wins over SMU and
Army, the Green Wave has stretched
its home winning streak to eight
games.
Dating back to the 1997 campaign, Tulane is 12-2 (.857) in its last 14 games in the Superdome. Success vs. Conference USA
Tulane is 13-6 since Conference USA play began in 1996. However, the Green Wave has posted a 12-2 mark in league action since 1997, with both losses coming at Southern Miss.
Tulane has won seven-straight conference home games, with its last home loss coming against Houston in 1996.
Moving Up The Charts
Junior RB Toney Converse continues
to move up the rushing charts in the
Green Wave record book. With 10
carries last week against Syracuse,
Converse moved into 10th place on
Tulane's all-time rushing attempts
list with 345.
His next touchdown will move him into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time rushing TDs list at 13. He also ranks eighth on Tulane's career rushing chart with 1,870 yards, fourth in yards per game (69.25) and third in yards per carry (5.420).
Dawson Ties Tulane TD Mark
WR JaJuan Dawson, a member of the
Biletnikoff Award preseason watch
list, tied Marc Zeno's school record
of 25 career touchdown receptions
with a 39-yard score against Army.
Dawson, the fifth Tulane player in history to surpass 2,000 career receiving yards, is now ranked in the top five on Tulane's career lists for pass receptions (3rd, 182) and receiving yardage (2nd, 2,531).
Dawson needs 54 receptions and 1,193 yards to become Tulane's career leader in those categories.
Long Gone
QB Patrick Ramsey connected with WR
Kerwin Cook on an 80-yard TD strike
last week against Syracuse. The
play equaled the third-longest pass
play in school history and was
Tulane's longest play this season.
It was the longest career pass and reception for Ramsey and Cook, respectively, and the longest pass play Syracuse had allowed since the 1975 campaign. Dawson Grabs 16 vs. Mustangs
WR JaJuan Dawson set a school, Conference USA and Louisiana Superdome record with his 16 receptions against SMU.
Dawson's effort, which included a 60-yard reception on the Green Wave's first play from scrimmage, broke the Tulane record of 15 set by Wil Ursin against East Carolina in 1991.
More Dawson
Dawson reached a significant
milestone with his 218-yard
performance last Saturday. He is
just the third receiver in school
history to register three 150-yard
receiving games in his career. He
joins P.J. Franklin and Marc Zeno as
the only players to accomplish the
feat.
With his 13-yard TD catch against Southern Miss. Dawson has now scored a touchdown against every C-USA opponent, except for UAB, whom he faces for the first time in Tulane's regular-season finale on Nov. 20.
Seeking Another Winning Season
After consecutive seasons of 7-4
and 12-0, Tulane is seeking its
third-straight winning campaign.
The Wave hasn't had three-straight winning seasons since 1979-81.
Lighting Up the Scoreboard
The Green Wave has tallied 40 or
more points in 12 of its last 17
games. Furthermore, Tulane is
averaging 38.8 points over its last
27 contests.
Streaks Come To An End
Two interesting streaks came to an
end last week in the loss at
Syracuse. Tulane lost its first
game in the last two years when it
held an advantage in time of
possession. Prior to Oct. 2, Tulane
was 11-0 when holding the ball
longer than the opposition.
The 47-17 loss also ended a streak of four consecutive wins after a bye week. Including the 1998 Liberty Bowl, Tulane had not lost after week off since Sept. 14, 1996, in a 21-14 decision to Rice. Burnette Becomes A Target
Junior WR Adrian Burnette has stepped up to become one of the Wave's top receivers, reaching the 100-yard mark receiving in each of Tulane's first three games. He narrowly missed extending the streak to four, as he totaled 92 receiving yards vs. Syracuse.
His 29 catches and 459 yards to date are nearly double his career totals of 17 and 289 entering this season.
Burnette caught eighth passes for 107 yards against Southern Miss, nine passes for 136 yards and three TDs versus SMU, and five passes for 121 yards against Army.
Burnette's eight catches against the Golden Eagles matched his total from all of 1998, when he had eight receptions for 189 yards, including a 71-yard TD catch-and-run at Rutgers.
The Bastrop, La.-native ranks third in Conference USA (tied for 14th nationally) with 7.33 receptions per game and second in C-USA (ninth nationally) with 121.3 receiving yards per game
Marler Gives Wave a Kick
True freshman PK Seth Marler
connected for 4-of-5 field goal
attempts against Army, leaving him
one made field goal shy of the
school record.
After missing his first career attempt at Southern Miss, Marler, who also handles kickoffs for the Green Wave, has been good on six of his last nine field goal attempts.
Phillips Named to Butkus List
Junior LB Jerry Phillips, Tulane's
1998 leading tackler, is on the
Butkus Award preseason watch list.
He is one of 65 players named to the
list, which is presented by the
Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando
and goes annually to the nation's
top linebacker.
Phillips, a New Orleans native, has 28 tackles in three games. He missed the SMU contest with an pulled hamstring, but returned to the lineup against Syracuse and tallied 10 stops.
Hocke Produces vs. Syracuse
Sophomore RB Brad Hocke posted
career-best numbers in last
Saturday's game. The New Orleans
native entered the game with just 16
yards on four career carries, but
nearly doubled that with 30 yards on
16 totes vs. the Orangemen.
Included in that total was a
career-best 14-yard scamper.
Newcomers Make Impact
Freshmen have made quite an impact
on the Wave this season. Since the
season opener at Southern Miss
featured eight first-time starters,
plenty of new faces have debuted.
Offensively, three players earned their first career starts - QB Patrick Ramsey, TE Mike Truax and OT Charles Caldwell. On defense, LB Delando Davis, CB Ky Joseph, DE Glenn Lemoine, DE Kenan Blackmon and DT Roxie Shelvin all started for the first time.
In addition, eight true freshman also played against the Golden Eagles, highlighted by WR Kerwin Jones, who made his first career catch on a 10-yard touchdown reception for the Green Wave's first points of 1999.
Other true freshman to play included PK Seth Marler, who attempted all placements, FS Quentin Brown, RB Jeff Sanchez, DT Marlon Tickles, DE Floyd Dorsey, WR James Dunn and DB Terry Fontenot.
