NEW ORLEANS - Tulane head football coach Chris Scelfo finalized his first Green Wave coaching staff Wednesday with the addition of defensive line coach Giff Smith.
Smith, a three-time All-America defensive end at Georgia Southern, spent the two seasons coaching the secondary at his alma mater. Prior to his return to Statesboro, Smith spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Arkansas (1991-93) and two years as a staff assistant on the same staff with Scelfo at Georgia (1994-95).
"Giff brings a tremendous amound of knowledge to our defensive linemen," said Scelfo. "Having been a great defensive lineman himself, he'll be able to teach our young linemen the tricks of the trade."
In addition to earning All-America honors as a player, Smith helped lead the Eagles to three I-AA national titles (1986, 1989 and 1990) and was named the 1990 NCAA Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year.
Smith joins previously announced assistants Darin Barbier (defensive backs), Garret Chachere (outside linebackers), Joe Dickinson (recruiting coordinator/running backs), Don Mahoney (offensive line), Pete McGinnis (defensive coordinator/inside linebackers), David Oliver (tight ends/assistant offensive line), Frank Scelfo (assistant head coach/quarterbacks) and Trooper Taylor (wide receivers).
The Green Wave, which finished 1998 12-0 and ranked seventh nationally, is scheduled to begin spring practice March 4.
