NEW ORLEANS - Tulane Head Football Coach Chris Scelfo and his staff welcomed 32 newcomers to campus Wednesday afternoon as preparations for the upcoming season began in earnest. The group included 23 scholarship freshmen and nine walk-ons.
Scelfo was pleased with what he saw from his new crop of Green Wave players.
"We expect eight to 10 of these guys to contribute this year," said Scelfo. "With only eight seniors on our team, we'll need for some of these players to step up early for us."
The newcomers will go through an orientation session Thursday before busing to St. Paul's School in Covington to begin freshmen-only two-a-days on Friday.
"The orientation is basically a welcome to the university," said Scelfo. "We'll try to give them an idea of what's about to happen to them, both academically and athletically. It's important for them to get their feet wet and for us to explain to them how we do things at Tulane."
Tulane's varsity players report Sunday afternoon, with the first full-squad workout scheduled for Monday in Covington.
