COVINGTON, La. - After a grueling first-day of full-squad practices, Tulane head football coach Chris Scelfo was satisfied with the Green Wave's effort and intensity in their two workouts Monday at St. Paul's School.
"Overall, I thought the practice was good," said Scelfo. "With this being our first day of practice, there was some tension and anxiety out there. These kids obviously worked hard this summer and are in pretty good condition, but we have some that aren't.
"I think overall there was a lot of competition, and I thought we grasped our both offense and defense pretty well. Fortunately, we didn't have many mental errors."
Scelfo and his staff split the morning practices into two groups, which each worked for nearly an hour and a half each. The afternoon session combined the two groups.
"The split-sessions in the mornings allows us to get more repetitions for each player," said Scelfo, "which is especially beneficial for our younger players." Scelfo said Tulane will continue the split-session morning practices both Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Green Wave continues two-a-day practices in Covington through Friday before holding a scrimmage Saturday morning. The team will return to New Orleans following the scrimmage.
