COVINGTON, La. - With eight starters returning off the nation's second-best scoring offense from a year ago, it was no surprise that the Tulane offense highlighted the Green Wave's first day in full pads Thursday.
"The offense came out and showed its experience," said head coach Chris Scelfo. "They had a good tempo and made some plays, which is what you would expect from them."
Quarterbacks Patrick Ramsey and Derrick Joseph both proved effective while splitting time between the first and second units. Scelfo has yet to indicate a leader in the battle to replace former Wave quarterback and two-time Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Shaun King.
While the offense clicked, the defense also showed glimpses of improved athleticism. However, that was tempered by made due to inexperience. Tulane has just three starters returning defensively.
"A couple of times on defense we had a chance to make a play and we didn't," said Scelfo. "That's what we have to learn how to do. We have to learn how to finish a play off.
"Overall, for our first practice in pads, it was good. The kids gave a lot of effort."
The Green Wave will conduct another round of two-a-day practices in Covington on Friday before holding a scrimmage Saturday. The team will return to New Orleans following the scrimmage.
