COVINGTON, La. - Tulane spent Friday preparing for its first major scrimmage with a morning practice of contact drills and an afternoon session concentrated on special teams. The Green Wave will conduct its first scrimmage of the fall Saturday morning at St. Paul's School.
"I thought the kids came out here today and showed good enthusiasm and concentration," said head coach Chris Scelfo. "I was afraid they might drag around, but we didn't have many balls on the ground on offense and defensively I thought we swarmed pretty good. Overall, I was pleased with the way the kids came out and practiced today."
Despite dealing with consecutive days of 100-degree temperatures, Scelfo has been pleased with the amount of work the Wave has gotten accomplished during its first week of practice.
"At this time during camp, a lot of it is dealing with the mental game. These players know that there's enough competition everywhere. If you don't practice, you probably won't be on that bus September 6 (for the season opener at Southern Miss). Our kids have a pretty good understanding right now about the difference between pain and injury, and they're fighting through it pretty good."
The Green Wave returns to New Orleans following Saturday's scrimmage and will hold another week of two-a-days on campus next week. Tulane opens with Southern Miss on Labor Day, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.
