SHALIMAR, Fla. -- Bolstered by five players in the top 14 places, the Tulane women's golf team stands in second place after Friday's opening round of the 2000 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship at Shalimar Pointe Golf and Country Club.
Led by Kathy Schafer, Tulane carded a 302 team total and is in second place after the first round of play, four strokes behind Louisville at 298. The Green Wave's 302 total was its lowest round of the spring and the team's third-lowest round of the season.
Schafer, a freshman from Bogota, Colombia, fired a two-over-par 74 and stands four shots out of the lead after the first round of play. She is currently tied for fourth place with Memphis' Marianne Ruud, and trails Louisville's Katherine Mowat, who fired a first-round 70 (-2).
