CINCINNATI - Sophomore running back Mewelde Moore rushed for 249 yards to establish a new Tulane school record, but it was not enough for the Green Wave, which fell to Cincinnati, 46-33, on Saturday evening at Nippert Stadium
Bearcat freshman Gino Guidugli threw four touchdown passes to tie a Cincinnati school record in the victory.
Moore broke the 31-year old record of 246 yards set by David Abercrombie in 1970 against N.C. State. He also had 87 yards receiving for 336 all-purpose yards, a school and Conference USA record. The sophomore had a pair of touchdowns as well, one through the air and one on the ground.
Cincinnati (2-2, 2-0) had not beaten Tulane (1-5, 0-2) in five games dating to 1981.
Guidugli was 22-of-32 for 312 yards, a yard better than his previous school record for a freshman. Patrick Ramsey was 24-of-45 for 253 yards for Tulane.
Tulane jumped to a 10-0 lead on Seth Marler's 30-yard field goal and Ramsey's 13-yard pass to Bobby Hoover. But Cincinnati answered with a 4-yard run by Ray Jackson and a 13-yard pass to Tim Walker to take a 14-10 lead.
Jackson scored twice more in the third quarter on passes of 20 and 3 yards, and Tye Keith combined with Guidugli on a 45-yard play to give the Bearcats a 39-19 lead.
DeMarco McCleskey ran for 139 yards and one touchdown, including the final score with 38 seconds left that put the game out of reach.
Cincinnati was playing without defensive lineman Antwan Peek, suspended for one game for receiving unspecified extra benefits in violation of NCAA rules.
The Tulane traveling party had its Friday flight canceled from New Orleans and didn't arrive in Cincinnati until Saturday.
