NEW ORLEANS - Tulane freshman tight end Bobby Hoover has been named a first-team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News as the publication announced its 2001 All-America and Freshman All-America teams Monday. The magazine named Tulane kicker Seth Marler, who won the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker, to its fourth-team All-America squad.
Hoover caught 15 passes for 137 yards in 2001, nearly equaling the total number of catches by Tulane tight ends in the last four seasons combined (17). He caught passes in nine of Tulane's 12 games in 2001, including a 13-yard touchdown grab at Cincinnati. An able blocker, the Katy, Texas, native helped Green Wave running back Mewelde Moore to the most successful season by a running back in Tulane history. Hoover also contributed on nearly every Tulane special team, returning three kickoffs for 21 yards from his up-back position on the kickoff return unit.
Hoover is the fifth Green Wave player to earn Freshman All-America honors and follows 2000 honoree Mewelde Moore, who was an All-Rookie choice by Football News last season.
Marler picked up his fifth All-America award of the 2001 season. The junior from Lilburn, Ga. was a first-team choice by the Football Writer's Association of America and by Collegefootballnews.com after making 15-of-16 field goals and 39-of-40 extra points this year, including his first 54 kicks of the year and all seven of his field goal attempts from 40 yards and longer. ABC Sports Online named Marler to its second team while he was the third team honoree by Football News.
