NEW ORLEANS - Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo and offensive coordinator Frank Scelfo will spend Christmas in Montgomery, Ala., where they will coach the Gray offense in the 64th Annual Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic on Christmas Day. The game, which will be nationally-televised by ABC, kicks off at 11 a.m. (CST) next Tuesday from Montgomery's Cramton Bowl.
The Scelfo brothers are teaming up with Virginia head coach Al Groh and assistant coach Al Golden, who are coaching the Gray defense in the contest. Arizona State Head Coach Dirk Koetter leads the Blue offense while Bobby Wallace of Temple is head coach of the Blue defense.
"Our being here is a tribute to our offensive players and what they accomplished last year," said Chris Scelfo. "It's an honor to be a part of an all-star game with the tradition of the Blue-Gray Game, and I'm really enjoying the experience. You're limited in the things you can do offensively, but it's good to be around these players.
One player the Scelfos will have at their disposal is Tulane receiver Terrell Harris. The senior wide receiver caught 166 passes for 1,631 yards during his Tulane career, including 53 grabs for 623 yards in 2001. He ranks fifth all-time in pass receptions and eighth in receiving yards and caught passes in 29 straight games to complete his career.
"I'm excited about Terrell Harris being here," Scelfo said. "He's very deserving of the honor. This event provides great exposure for Tulane and brings more national recognition to the football program."
Harris is the 57th Green Wave player to play in the Blue-Gray Game. Future TU pros Richard Harvey (1988), Jerald Sowell (1996) and JaJuan Dawson (1999) all participated in the contest at the conclusion of their Tulane careers.
Chris Scelfo completed his third season as the Tulane head coach in 2001. The New Iberia, La. native has a 13-22 record with the Green Wave and has directed the most successful offense in Conference USA in each of the last three seasons. The Green Wave offense ranked 12th in the nation in passing with its average of 291.5 yards per game, while Tulane was 28th in total offense, compiling 425 yards per contest.
Proceeds from the Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic go to the Lions Club sight conservation projects and youth charities. Over 300 professional representatives attended the 2000 contest as the game is the first senior all-star game of the year.
