NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane assistant football coaches Frank Scelfo, David Oliver and Giff Smith will take on additional duties in 2001, Green Wave Head Coach Chris Scelfo announced Thursday. Assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach Frank Scelfo will become the team's first offensive coordinator under Chris Scelfo, while tight ends coach David Oliver will coordinate all of the Green Wave's special teams. Recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Giff Smith will add the title of associate head coach.
Frank Scelfo, a five-year veteran of the Tulane coaching staff who has coached wide receivers, tight ends and quarterbacks during his tenure at the school, will take over the reigns of the Green Wave offense. Last season, Tulane ranked seventh nationally in total offense and third in passing offense.
"I have tremendous confidence in our entire offensive staff and Frank has been an integral part of that staff and in the success of our offense the last two years," Chris Scelfo said.
Oliver will take over responsibility for all of Tulane's special teams while continuing to serve as the Wave's tight ends coach. The Colorado native enters his fifth season with the Green Wave in 2001.
"David has been very instrumental in our success in many different areas," said the head coach. "He's a very enthusiastic and organized coach who will pay close attention to detail. Special teams is an important area to me and this move gives it the proper emphasis."
As associate head coach, Smith adds administrative duties to his defensive line and recruiting coordinator responsibilities. Smith, an All-American at Georgia Southern, enters his third year with the Tulane program in 2001 and his second as recruiting coordinator.
Tulane opens spring practices next Tuesday, March 13 with the spring game concluding spring drills to be held as part of the Tulane "Spring Fling" April 7 at Tad Gormley Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and tickets are available for $7 each, $5 for children, through Ticketmaster or the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at 504-861-WAVE.
