No. 7 Vanderbilt Defeats Tulane in Women's Tennis

NEW ORLEANS -- With Tulane's top player Anna Monhartova sitting out, seventh-ranked Vanderbilt claimed a 7-0 victory over the Green Wave in women's tennis action at the Goldring Tennis Complex Sunday.
A pair of Tulane players took their Commodore opponents to three sets, including Maiko Cook, who extended 55th-ranked Aleke Tsoubanos 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Tulane's Nancy Kockott also won the first set from Vandy's Jenny Miller before falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Vanderbilt also claimed the doubles point, winning the No. 1 and 2 doubles by the identical scores of 8-4 as both of those two doubles teams are ranked in the Top 25 in the nation.
"There were some encouraging signs and we're happy to attract an opponent of their caliber to come and play us in New Orleans," said Tulane Head Coach David Schumacher. "As always, we'll look ahead to the next match at Mississippi State, which will be another tough opponent for us."
With the loss, the Green Wave fell to 2-7 on the season. Tulane takes on Mississippi State Monday in Starkville, Miss. at 1:30 p.m. before returning home to face SMU next Saturday, March 10, at Noon.
