NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University football coach Chris Scelfo has announced the signing of two student-athletes for the Green Wave football program. Carl Davis (Algiers, La.), a freshman from O.P. Walker High School, will join the team and be eligible immediately, while Brandt Quick (Mandeville, La.) will redshirt the upcoming season after transferring from Kansas State.
Davis is a 5-11, 170 wide receiver, who gained 894 yards on 52 receptions as a senior playing for coach Frank Wilson at Walker. He had 10 touchdown receptions, while also returning a punt and a kick-off for scores. He was named the District 10-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player and was also named all-state by the Louisiana High School Coaches Association. In addition, he was honored for his academics as a WWL-TV A+ Athlete.
Quick, a 6-1, 235-pouind fullback, was a standout at Jesuit High School before enrolling at Kansas State in the fall of 1999. After red-shirting his freshman season, he played in two games last year for the Wildcats. As a senior at Jesuit in 1998, Quick rushed for 1,728 yards and 28 touchdowns and was rated as one of the top fullbacks in the state by the National Recruiting Advisor. His top game was a 28-carry, 260-yard, two-touchdown performance as a senior.
Davis and Quick join Wallace Mateen (Richardson, Texas) as the newest additions to the Green Wave lineup. Mateen, who signed earlier in July, is a 6-0, 270-pound defensive lineman from Berkner High School. While playing for coach Jim Ledford, Mateen was a three-time all-district selection, as well as a first-team all-city honoree as a senior. He was named his team's Defensive MVP, while also earning the team's leadership award. A Texas powerlifting champion as a senior, Mateen collected 50 tackles and five sacks as a senior.
Fall practice begins for the Green Wave on Thursday with the reporting of freshmen. Veterans report to practice on Monday. The team will conduct its preseason drills at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La.
