PENSACOLA, Fla. - - Freshman Brook Parker scored a pair of goals and had an assist to lead the Tulane women's soccer team to a 5-0 win against the Pensacola Samba club team in exhibition action on Sunday.
Both teams were tentative at the start of the game, as the field was wet from steady rains which had last all afternoon. However, the Green Wave began to exert control of the match midway though the first half and took a well-deserved lead when Parker deflected in a Colleen Lake shot to give Tulane a 1-0 cushion.
"This was a good team win," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "Everyone was involved today. We are starting to gain a winning mentality. We had plenty of opportunities and were able to finish on some of them."
Lake, a preseason All-Conference USA selection, added Tulane's second goal just seven minutes later thanks to assists from Mandy Schumacher and Megan Stack. Schumacher and Stack combined for a give-and-go at the top of the 18-yard box before Schumacher's pass found Lake open in front of the goal.
Sophomore Tiffany Correia increased Tulane's lead to 3-0 at the 37 minute mark, volleying home a Caitlyn Gibson free kick. The Wave took a 4-0 lead into the halftime break on Parker's second goal of the afternoon, with Corriea this time turning provider. Correia took a pass at midfield and fed Parker, who raced in alone against the Samba goalkeeper.
Parker added an assist on Tulane's final goal. Emily McArthur chipped a free kick to Parker, who's first-time shot was well-saved by the Samba goalkeeper. However, Alycia Wanat was there to clean up the rebound and give the Wave a 5-0 advantage.
Tulane outshot Samba 18-3 during the game, while Wave goalkeepers Sara Simpson and Marilyn Obrofta, both freshmen, combined to post the shutout..
The game was Tulane's first of two exhibition games before the regular season begins on August 31. The Wave will next face Tampa's Blackwatch club team on Saturday, August 25 at the McWilliams Athletic Complex on the Tulane campus. The exhibition is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
