COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior goalkeeper Megan Morey posted nine saves and junior midfielder Jackie Obert tallied a pair of shots on goal, but it was not enough as the Tulane University women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Conference USA foe UTEP in the season finale Friday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
The Miners scored a pair of goals in the first half and another three in the second. Melissa Abraham posted a pair of goals for UTEP, while Brandi Aston, Courtney Casey and Kia Sams each added one. With the loss, Tulane concludes the 2005 season 1-11-0 overall and 1-8-0 in C-USA play. UTEP, which will advance to the C-USA Tournament next week in Houston, improves to 17-2-1 on the year and 6-2-1 in league action.
"When you look at the results of our season, you may think it was one where we would think, `I'm glad the season's over,' but it's not because we never really felt we had a chance to even get started" Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said in reference to the team's interrupted season and subsequent move to College Station, Texas, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
"For our Player of the Game today, we actually had three - seniors Jessica Mendez, Kristen Tasca and Megan Morey. That's not just based on what they did today or even this season, but for what they have done throughout their four-year careers."
UTEP wasted little time getting on the board as Aston gathered her own rebound and beat Morey for the only goal the Miners would need in the eighth minute of the contest. Abraham added her first goal of the game 10 minutes later when she took a pass from heather Boakye and sent a just below the cross bar to give UTEP a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Casey made it a 3-0 affiar in the 60th minute on an unassisted goal, and Abraham got on the board again when Angie Kleinfelder and Kia Sams provided a pair of touch bases to give her an open look at goal. Sams closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute on a pass from Leslie Platz from the left flank and fired from point-blank range.
The Green Wave will spend the remainder of the 2005 fall semester at Texas A&M before returning to New Orleans for the spring semester beginning on Jan. 17.
