COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Hosting its final "home" game of the season on Friday afternoon against Conference USA newcomer UTEP at the Aggie Soccer Complex, the Tulane women's soccer team will recognize three members of the squad in special Senior Day festivities.
All three seniors made significant contribuations for the Green Wave last weekend as midfielder Kristen Tasca started a Tulane comeback with her first goal of the season late in the Houston game while forward Jessica Mendez knocked in the lone goal against Rice. Goalkeeper Megan Morey turned away a total of 12 shots in the two losses.
Mendez and junior midfield Jackie Obert have both recorded two goals to lead the Wave (1-10, 1-7 C-USA) offensively while Tasca and junior Kali Miller each have one goal on the year.
UTEP, meanwhile, enters Friday's match sitting in fourth-place in the C-USA standings with a 15-2-1, 5-2-1 mark after falling to Rice, 3-1, on Sunday. Three UTEP players have notched more than 10 goals on the season, led by Jami Tullius's 13. Melissa Abraham has 12 goals to her credit while Cara Nordin has added 10 for the Miner offense.
"UTEP has a physical team that plays with a lot of heart," Tulane coach Betsy Anderson said. "They had done well last year, and moving to Conference USA has been a good challenge for them and they have lived up to the challenge. They'll be ready to go from the whistle as this game is important to them for seeding in the conference tournament."
Friday's game also marks the final time Mendez, Morey and Tasca, who helped Tulane win a school record 11 games in 2003, will play in Green Wave uniforms.
"Many teams will be playing for seeding this weekend, but we are playing for all that our three seniors have given to our team, Tulane University, the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana," Anderson said. "In so many ways it doesn't seem as though we are ending the season, especially from a physical and mental standpoint after missing nearly four weeks of the season after the hurricane. Our players have never quit and never stopped trying. We're continuously playing "catch up" but each player continues to work and to give to the team."
Kickoff for Friday's season finale is slated for 1:30 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Complex on the Texas A&M campus.
