NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Kathy Schafer (Bogata, Columbia) shot a six-over-par 150 to lead the Tulane University women's golf team to a seventh-place finish in day one of competition at the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt University Monday evening at Legends Country Club.
Schafer shot a one-over-par 73 in the second round to finish the day with a two-round score of 150 which ranked tied for 26th in the 14-team tournament. As a team, the Green Wave shot a 306 in the first round and cut four strokes off that total in the second round to finish the day with a team 608.
The Green Wave finished the first two rounds just six strokes behind sixth-placed Wake Forest (304-298=602), and ahead of four SEC teams, including in-state rival LSU which was 10th after day one (313-301=611).
Following Schafer for the Green Wave were sophomore Carolin Landmann (Dreicich, Germany) and senior Marcela Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.), who both finished the first day tied for 31st at nine-over-par (153). Freshman Alexis Wooster (Winnetka, Ill.) was next with a plus-12 156, while fellow freshman Lindsay Hulwick (Littleton, Colo.) rounded out the scoring with a 164.
Wooster and Landmann led the Green Wave in the first round and were tied for 28th with a four-over-par 76, including a 37 on the back nine by Wooster. Schafer and Hulwich finished round one tied for 37th with a plus-five 77 and Gonzalez was tied for 61st with a nine-over-par 81.
Host Vanderbilt leads the field after day one with a team 579, followed by Ohio State (583) and Furman (584). Furman's Jennifer Perri leads the individual competition with a four-under-par 140, including a minus-three 69 in the second round.
Tulane and the 14-team field will complete the Mason Randolph Championships when they complete the third and final round of competition Tuesday morning.
