Women's Tennis Fares Well At ITA Southwest Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas - - Five of the seven Tulane women's tennis players participating posted first-round wins in the opening day of the ITA Southwest Regional at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Courts at TCU on Friday.
Freshman Julie Smekodub, the tournament's top seed cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Arkansas State's Marusa Pogacnik, while senior Julie Morris, seeded eighth, was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over North Texas' Ashley Sammis.
Sophomore Ana Saaibi turned in a 6-1, 6-2 win over North Texas' Benita Bittner, while Lucy Wood was a 6-2, 6-0 winner against Arkansas-Little Rock's Cecilia Poveda. Maria Ivanov dropped her first set, but rallied to post a 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 decision over Houston's Miranda Foley.
Freshman Jenny Kuhn and sophomore Nancy Kockott weren't as fortunate however, dropping their first round match. Kuhn dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 decision to Centenary's Anja Schmidt, while Kockott, seeing her first action in more than year, came up on the short end of a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 decision to LSU's Rocio Fantilli.
The tournament continues on Saturday with the Round of 64 in singles action as well as the opening rounds of doubles play.
