
Tulane Wins Pair Of C-USA Monthly Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane claimed a pair of monthly awards from Conference USA as Julie Smekodub and Carolin Landmann were named Athlete of the Month for women's tennis and women's golf, respectively, the league office announced Monday.
Smekodub, a freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y., picked up the tennis honor after winning both the singles and doubles titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional. She finished the month of October with an impressive 8-1 record in singles and a 6-0 mark in doubles.
Entering the Southwest Regional as the No. 1 seed in singles, Smekodub dropped just two sets in seven matches during her march to the championship. In doubles, she teamed with fellow freshman Jenny Kuhn to win the regional title as the pair upset the No. 7, No. 3, No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in their final four matches. By winning the singles and doubles crowns, Smekodub has an automatic entry into the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Landmann, a junior from Frankfurt, Germany, was named the league's top golfer for the month of October after sharing medalist honors at the USF/Beacon Woods Invitational. At that event, she set the course record with a career-low 67 in the third round. Her play helped the Wave win the event and earn a Top 10 spot in the national polls for the first time in school history.
In addition to he play at the Beacon Woods Tournament, Landmann helped lead the Wave to a trio of Top 5 finishees and averaged a team-best 73.3 strokes per round. It marked the second time in her career that the junior has been named Conference USA's golfer of the month, as she also picked up the award this past March.
