Smekodub, Kuhn Reach Doubles Semifinals Of National Indoor Championships

FARMER's BRANCH, Texas - - The Tulane women's tennis duo of Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn won a pair of matches to move into the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships, held at the Brookhaven Country Club, on Friday.
In their opening match, the Green Wave pair upset the No. 2 seeded team of Linda Faltynkova and Katia Kolodynska of Oklahoma State, 8-5. In the quarterfinals, the duo upset Kentucky's Nathalie Roels and Sarah Witten, 8-5, to reach the semifinals.
Smekodub and Kuhn will face the team of Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova from Missouri in the semifinals.
In singles action, Smekodub reached the quarterfinals before falling to fourth-seeded Jewel Peterson of Southern Cal, 7-6, 6-4. In the round of 16, she posted a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Tulsa's Alicia Pillay.

The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three national championships tournaments for Division I collegiate tennis during the 2002-03 season. The first event, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, took place in Pacific Palisades, Calif., last month. Smekodub participated in that tournament, splitting a pair of matches in the qualifying draw. The season-ending NCAA Championships in May are the third tournament.
