NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Four players from the talent-rich state of Texas highlight the 2002 Tulane women's soccer recruiting class, head coach Betsy Anderson announced on Wednesday.
Jessica Mendez from Spring, Maren Miller from Dallas, Blair Trickey from Kingwood and Kristin Weegar from Hurst, have each signed a National Letter-of-Intent and will join the Green Wave at the start of the Fall semester.
"We are extremely excited to have these four players join the Tulane women's soccer program," Anderson said. "They each bring something different to the team that will prove to be invaluable next season. Jessica has the ability to take over games at either attacking midfielder or forward. She is extremely quick and has great vision. Maren is a tough player who will bring a tremendous defensive presence to the middle of the field. Blair has such a great knowledge of the game, both tactically and technically and should add a lot to our back line. Kristin is a great addition to our goalkeeping corps. She is such a hardworker and is very athletic."
Mendez, a versatile attacking player, joins the Green Wave after a stint with the nationally-renowned Challenge club team. She was invited to the adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) camp as one of the top 150 players in the nation. A two-year member of the South Texas Olympic Development team, Mendez helped lead Challenge to state and Region III championships. She currently attends Klein High School.
Miller, a defensive center midfielder, currently plays with the D'Feeters Club team, the former club of current Tulane players Tracey Powers and Alycia Wanat. Miller helped lead D'Feeters to a Texas state cup title and the Region III championship at the Under-16 level. She is also a member of the North Texas Olympic Development Program. Miller currently attends the Episcopal School of Dallas, where she is a three-time all-district selection.
Trickey, a tactically intelligent defender, plays with Mendez on the Challenge club team and helped lead the team to the Region III title and a Texas state cup championship. A long-time member of the Olympic Development program, Trickey is a member of the Region III team and has been a member of the Under-16 National Team pool. She was also invited to the adidas ESP camp, indicative of being one of the top 150 players in the nation. She currently attends Kingwood High School.
Weeger, an athletic goalkeeper, is currently a student at Richland High School where she was a first-team all-district selection. She plays club soccer with the Jato Image and is a member of the North Texas Olympic Development team.
Three members of Tulane's 2001 signing class - goalkeeper Sara Simpson and forwards Brook Parker and Lindsay Morris - were named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team this past Fall.
This past season, Anderson's first as head coach of the Green Wave, Tulane posted its first-ever winning record and finished with a 9-8 mark. In addition, Tulane was 7-3 in Conference USA play to earn the No. 4 seed at the league tournament. The Wave's best seeding prior to last season was seventh. Tulane returns all 11 starters from last season's team that set school records for most wins and shutouts while allowing the fewest goals in school history.
