NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's Julie Morris and Ana Maria Saaibi claimed singles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, but it was not enough as the Green Wave dropped a 5-2 decision to cross-town rival New Orleans in women's tennis action at the Goldring Tennis Center Saturday.
Tulane, ranked 41st in the nation, dropped to 2-2 on the season while #74 UNO improved to 2-1. The Green Wave altered its singles line-up when No. 2 player, undefeated Maria Ivanov, was sidelined by injury.
UNO opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Tulane's Morris then defeated UNO's Laetitia Zembski, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Wave freshman Saaibi took care of Celine Azais, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 to give the Green Wave a 2-1 lead.
After UNO's Patricia Osedumme defeated TU's Joyce Bergman 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to tie the match, the Lady Privateers claimed the final three singles matches, all in three sets, to get the win.
Tulane is next in action a week from Sunday (Feb. 17) when they will play host to Conference USA opponent Houston at 10 a.m. at the Goldring Tennis Center.
