NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane Green Wave women's tennis team upped its 2002 spring record to 5-3 with a 7-0 victory over UL-Lafayette in New Orleans Saturday. The match was played on the indoor courts of the Hilton Rivercenter.
Tulane began by taking the doubles point as the teams of Maria Ivanov and Joyce Bergman, Ana Saaibi and Julie Morris and Lucy Wood and Anneli Axsater combined to surrender just one game. The teams of Ivanov and Bergman and Wood and Axsater shut out their opponents 8-0 while Saaibi and Morris took an 8-1 win.
The singles matches were almost as one-sided as the Green Wave did not surrender a set in sweeping the Ragin' Cajuns. Bergman, playing at No. 3 singles, had the closest call as she prevailed 6-2, 7-6 over Amandine Hubert. Saaibi, meanwhile, had the "double bagel" with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amanda Cowieson at No. 4 singles. Maiko Cook had nearly as easy of a time at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Susan Linden.
Tulane claimed its third straight 7-0 victory and takes that streak into Sunday's match versus Arkansas-Little Rock. That match will begin at 10 a.m. at the Goldring Tennis Courts on the Tulane University campus.
