NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane student-athletes claimed three different Conference USA awards, the league office announced Tuesday.
Julie Morris was selected as the Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week, while Soloman Kandie was chosen as the C-USA Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Carolin Landmann earned the league's Women's Golfer of the Month award for March.
Morris, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., earned her Player of the Week award after posting a pair of singles wins over the weekend. Playing at No. 2 singles for the Green Wave, Morris posted an impressive 6-4, 7-6 win over South Alabama's Nienke Scheltens before registering a 6-1, 7-6 upset over VCU's 48th-ranked Martina Nedelkova. She also teamed with Ana Saaibi to record a doubles win against No. 9 VCU.
Kandie, a senior from Nairobi, Kenya, was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Relays last week. His time of 8:42.92 automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Championships in the event. Kandie has twice earned All-America honors in the steeplechase, including a third-place finish at the 2000 NCAA Championships.
Landmann, a sophomore from Frankfurt, Germany, was named Conference USA's top golfer for the month of March after posting Top 15 finishes at three different tournaments. She claimed medalist honors at the Green Wave Women's gold Classic, helping lead Tulane to the team title. She followed that with a second-place showing at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout and a 13th-place finish at the USF/Waterlefe Invitational.
