NEW ORLEANS -- Five Tulane golfers earned recognition on the 2002 All-Louisiana men's and women's golf teams and women's head coach Sue Bower was named Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Friday.
Bower, who completed her ninth year at the helm of the Tulane women's golf program in 2002, led her team to its most successful season this year as the Green Wave achieved a ranking of No. 31 and played in the NCAA Regional for the second time in school history. At the NCAA East Regional in Baton Rouge, Tulane missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship by just one stroke, finishing in ninth place with a score of 894. Bower also picked up Conference USA Coach of the Year recognition.
"(Winning) Coach of the Year is a reflection on my team, which I think is the Conference USA and Louisiana team of the year," Bower said. "They're a great group to coach, I'm pleased with what the team was able to achieve this year and I'm excited about the future of this program."
Three members of Bower's team - sophomore Carolin Landmann, junior Kathy Schafer and freshman Alexis Wooster - were named to the All-Louisiana women's golf team as Tulane claimed three of the five spots on the squad. They were joined by LSU's Meredith Duncan, a unanimous choice as the Louisiana Women's Golfer of the Year, and Lindy Hitdlebaugh of LSU. Wooster, the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, and LSU's Brooke Shelton shared Louisiana Freshman of the Year honors.
On the men's side, Tulane freshman Chris Wheeler was a first team All-Louisiana selection while his freshman teammate, Mark Sullivan, earned a spot on the second team. Tulane's first All-Conference USA choice since 1996, Wheeler claimed four Top 10 finishes in his rookie season and led the team with a stroke average of 73.5. Sullivan posted a trio of Top 10 finishes and had the second-lowest scoring average on the team at 75.5.
Southeastern Louisiana's Andy Smith was named the Louisiana Men's Golfer of the Year while LSU head coach Greg Jones earned Men's Coach of the Year honors and the Tigers Heath West was selected Freshman of the Year. Smith, West, Nathan Goulding of LSU and Adrien Mork of McNeese State joined Wheeler on the All-Louisiana first team.
