NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University football team dodged bad weather and had two productive work-outs at the Westfeldt Practice Facility on Wednesday.
The morning practice had hints of the typical mid-August humidity, but remained a relatively cool two-hour session. In the afternoon, despite forecasts for rain and thunder, the Green Wave escaped with just a few sprinkles of rain and turned in another strong preseason effort.
"We really came out and competed with everything we did," head coach Chris Scelfo said. "The kids are really working and we had another cool day. When you have good competition, it makes everyone better."
Scelfo pointed out junior quarterback J.P. Losman (Venice, Calif.) had another excellent day for the Wave.
"J.P. had a good practice," Scelfo said. "His reads were good, he threw crisp balls and he scrambled some. I was pleased with his effort."
Losman's top play was likely a perfectly thrown ball between two defenders to junior wide receiver Roydell Williams (LaPlace, La.), who dodged a defender and jogged in for a 60-yard touchdown reception. Losman is taking over quarterbacking duties for Patrick Ramsey who was the first round draft pick of the Washington Redskins after a stellar Green Wave career. Losman saw action in three games, passing for 487 yards and four touchdowns in 2001. One of those TDs was a 50-yard strike to Williams against East Carolina in the third game of the season.
The Wave will have a single practice session on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. It will be the first day of full pads and contact for Tulane, which has had its full squad in camp for five days.
Tulane has 16 more days until its season opener against Southern University in the Big Easy Classic on August 31st at the Superdome. Single-game tickets for the Southern and Texas (Sept. 28) games are currently available, as well as season tickets for the entire seven-game schedule.
