MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior running back Mewelde Moore, a first team all-conference selection last year, was voted by Conference USA coaches to the 2002 Preseason All-League team, it was announced today. Moore is joined by junior wide receiver Roydell Williams and senior kicker Seth Marler on the team.
Moore, who in just two seasons has become the only player in Tulane history to tally over 2,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving, led Tulane in both rushing yardage (1,421) and pass receptions (65) in 2001. He had more receptions than any other returning running back in the nation.
The junior, who played professional baseball in the San Diego Padres' organization during the past two summers, needs 784 yards to break Tulane's 54-year old record of 3,095 set by Eddie Price (1946-49). Moore already holds 11 school records, including single-season rushing and all-purpose yardage and single-game rushing and all-purpose yardage.
"Mewelde is as productive a player as any I have coached," Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo said. "His rushing ability, his pass receiving and his leadership in the locker room all contribute to his success as a player. And his numbers speak for themselves. He is a very mature, organized and self-motivated young man. Whatever path he chooses in life, he will be successful."
Senior Seth Marler was selected by league coaches to repeat as the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year. The winner of the 2001 Lou Groza Award as the top placekicker in the nation, Marler was near-perfect, connecting on 15-of-16 field goals and 39-of-40 extra-point attempts. The Lilburn, Ga., native was a First Team All-American last season (Football Writers), the first first-team All-America selection for the Wave since 1987.
Tulane's other first team selection is junior wide receiver Roydell Williams. The LaPlace, La., native was an all-league second team selection last year after catching 56 passes for a team-high 886 yards. He also had 11 receiving touchdowns, tied for the fourth-most in a season at Tulane.
The Green Wave opens preseason camp on August 7th when freshman report to the Tulane campus. Veterans report on August 10th. The season opens with the second annual Big Easy Classic between Tulane and Southern University at the Superdome on August 31st.
