NEW ORLEANS - First-team selections running back Mewelde Moore, wide receiver Roydell Williams and linebacker Anthony Cannon headline a list of eight Tulane players chosen to the 2003 All-Louisiana Football teams announced Sunday by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association. In addition to Moore, Williams and Cannon, Tulane placed safety Tra Boger and tight end Jerome Landry on the second team, while quarterback J.P. Losman and defensive end Billy Harrison earned honorable mention notice. Of the eight players honored, six will return for the Green Wave in 2004 as only Moore and Losman are seniors.
Moore, the most prolific running back in Tulane history, earned first team All-Louisiana honors for the fourth consecutive season. He gained 915 yards on 185 carries in 2003 despite missing the final three games of his collegiate career with a broken left hand. The Baton Rouge, La. product set 24 Tulane and seven Conference USA records during his career, including the all-time marks for both rushing and all-purpose yards. He ranks 11th all-time in Division I-A in career all-purpose yards and is only the second player to compile more than 4,000 rushing and 2,000 receiving yards in his career.
Williams, like Moore a first team All-Conference USA choice in 2003, led Tulane in receiving and ranked among the Top Three receivers in C-USA as a junior. He caught 66 passes for 1,006 yards and nine touchdowns to become just the fifth player in Wave history to have a 1,000-yard receiving season.
A sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., Cannon recorded his second straight 100-tackle season despite missing nearly two entire games due to injury. Cannon finished the season with 102 tackles, 60 solo, to rank tied for third on the team.
Boger, a junior from Marietta, Ga., led the Green Wave in tackles with 133 from his safety spot and had a part in nine turnovers with three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles. Landry was Tulane's lone healthy tight end through most of the year and finished with nine catches, one for a touchdown, and a two-point conversion.
Losman completed one of the top three seasons by a quarterback in Tulane history as his 33 touchdown passes rank among the Top 10 in the nation and are second all-time for the Green Wave. He passed for 3,077 yards in 2003 while completing 251-of-422 attempts with 14 INTs. The Venice, Calif. native expected to be one of the top quarterbacks taken in the upcoming 2004 NFL draft also ranks in the Top 10 all-time in Conference USA in most career passing and total offense categories.
A starter at defensive end, true freshman Billy Harrison topped all Conference USA rookies in tackles with 65 while leading Tulane in tackles for loss (7.5) and tying for the team lead in quarterback sacks (3.0). The C-USA All-Freshman choice was also an honorable mention Freshman All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com.
Tulane completed the 2003 season with a record of 5-7 after winning two of its last three games. All seven of the Green Wave's losses came to bowl-bound teams as the Wave battled a wave of injuries which sidelined 25 players during the season.
