NEW ORLEANS - Four days before the season opener versus TCU, the Tulane Green Wave was called off the practice field due to lightning before completing a two-hour, 15-minute workout at the Westfeldt Facility on Thursday. Still, Head Coach Chris Scelfo said the team had a productive workout while adjusting to class schedules, as well as the novelty of a Monday night game instead of the usual Saturday contest.
"Practice went well," Scelfo said. "We were interrupted by lightning which set us back for a little while, but we were able to get all of our work in."
As for playing on Monday night in a nationally-televised ESPN broadcast, Scelfo said the adjustment will come next week when the turnaround between games will be five days instead of seven. Tulane takes on Northwestern State at Tad Gormley Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6th at 7 p.m.
"It's the first game so the schedule should not affect us at all," Scelfo said. "It will make next week a short week, but we'll cross that bridge next week."
Tulane players returned to class Wednesday and that has produced the biggest adjustment this week with practices moved from 4 p.m. to 2 p.m.
"The biggest adjustment has been going back to classes and getting used to a different routine," Scelfo said. "For three weeks it's been only football and now there are more mental demands on the student-athletes. They've got to use their time management skills."
The Green Wave will hold closed workouts Friday and Saturday before going into the traditional pregame schedule on Sunday. Tickets to the TCU game, as well as to the entire Tulane season, are on sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
