NEW ORLEANS, La. - Each year, the American Football Coaches Association selects 11 Division I-A student-athletes for its Good Works Team, which honors players for their dedication and commitment to community service. Included among the 2003 selections is Green Wave senior running back Mewelde Moore, the all-time leading rusher for Tulane and for Conference USA.
In addition to holding 23 school records for the Green Wave, Moore is a business major on track to graduate in four years. This past spring, the Baton Rouge native was honored by the Freeman School of Business with its Community Service Award for Business Ethics, which recognizes the student who goes above and beyond the call of duty to share with students the importance of social responsibility in business, as well as personal accountability. Moore had spent numerous hours working with students at John McDonogh Senior High School in New Orleans.
"This is a tremendous honor for Mewelde," Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo said. "It really does a great job of characterizing him. He is in outstanding company on this team. He is very deserving of this honor."
"It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities."
In addition to his work through the Freeman School of Business, Moore is active in other community service activities, such as reading and speaking to young children and Tulane's annual Shadow a Student-Athlete Day. As a member of the San Diego Padres baseball organization, Moore has participated in numerous summer baseball clinics.
Athletic ability is not part of the criteria for selection to the team.
In addition to the I-A team, a combined team is selected from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA. From 1992-96, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting teams.
Moore is the fourth selection to the AFCA Good Works Team, but the first since 1997. He joins Shawn Jones (1995), Derrick Franklin (1996) and Dennis O'Sullivan (1997).
