NEW ORLEANS -- The Tulane women's soccer team achieved an almost unbelievable milestone during the Fall 2003 semester, and it had nothing to do with setting a school record for wins, picking up its first victory in the Conference USA tournament, or putting its first player on the first-team All-Conference USA team. While those accomplishments were impressive benchmarks for Betsy Anderson's 2003 squad, the team achieved a much more amazing feat as 25 of the Wave's 27 soccer student-athletes were named to the Fall 2003 Tulane Scholar-Athlete list with semester grade point averages of 3.0 or above.
"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes excelling in the classroom and on the field," said head coach Betsy Anderson. "This was our best performance in both areas in our program's history. We have a very committed group that gives their all in all facets. The standards the team set in the classroom are expected the moment a freshman steps foot on campus."
The 25 soccer players headline a list of 134 student-athletes overall who qualified for the Scholar-Athlete designation for Fall 2003. Of those 134, six individuals recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average, including three members of the Green Wave men's golf team. Tom Shaw's men's golf squad, who had nine current student-athletes (out of a 10-man roster) on the 3.0 list, saw perfect semesters notched by senior Mike Rodrigue, junior Jeff Osborn and sophomore Wes Hitchcock and was the only team with multiple 4.0 student-athletes. Also recording perfect 4.0 g.p.a.'s last fall were women's tennis All-American Jenny Kuhn, Luke Hooper of the men's cross country team and Ellen Vollmers from women's track and field.
Second to the soccer team's Tulane-leading total of 25 Scholar-Athletes was the Green Wave football team with 19 players on the list, while baseball had 18 players achieve a 3.0 g.p.a. and women's track contributed 18 Scholar-Athletes. In addition to men's golf with nine Scholar-Athletes, the all-newcomer women's swimming team had nine 3.0s. Volleyball placed eight student-athletes on the list and each of Tulane's programs had at least two players with a 3.0 grade point average last semester.
"I want to commend all of our student-athletes, but especially the soccer and men's golf teams, for their academic accomplishments this fall," said Rick Dickson, Tulane Director of Athletics. "All of our teams have worked extremely hard in the classroom and to see this type of results is exciting."
