NEW ORLEANS - Darryl Mason, a coaching veteran with nearly 20 years as a collegiate assistant coach, and Lorenzo "Zo" Costantini, who spent the last four seasons as the defensive line coach at the University of Central Florida, have joined the Tulane football coaching staff as wide receivers and defensive line coach, respectively, Tulane Head Coach Chris Scelfo announced Monday.
"I'm very pleased to add these two high quality individuals to our staff," Scelfo said. "Both of them are excellent teachers who are also excellent people and will fit in well with the goals and philosophies of Tulane Football."
Mason has spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Northwestern State University, where the offense broke a multitude of school records while averaging 376 yards and 32.2 points per game. He also served as receivers coach at NSU in 2000-2001 and 1990-93. In addition, Mason has been receivers coach at Weber State and at East Tennessee State, outside linebackers coach at Idaho State and tight ends coach at UNLV. He has spent the last six seasons in Louisiana.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Mason served as team captain in his senior year of 1981 and was an All-Southwest Conference choice that year as well. He played in a bowl game all four of his seasons with the Razorbacks, and went on to play four years in the USFL where he was a three-year starter for the Birmingham Stallions.
"Darryl is very well-organized and is an excellent teacher of fundamentals and technique, which should improve our receiver play," Scelfo said. "He also has excellent knowledge of the goals of Tulane University, having worked in this state for as long as he has."
Costantini, a four-year letterwinner at defensive tackle at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1986-90, coached at UCF from 2000-2003 where his defensive line compiled 31 sacks in 2002 while the Knights' defense ranked in the nation's Top 30 in both 2000 and 2001. He went to UCF after five seasons at his alma mater where he served as defensive line coach and assistant strength coach. While at UTEP, Costantini coached five All-WAC selections, including 1999 WAC Defensive Player of the Year Brian Young.
"Zo brings tremendous enthusiasm and knowledge of defensive line play that will be critical to the development of our young defensive linemen," Scelfo said.
Mason and Costantini fill the spots left by Trooper Taylor and Giff Smith, who left Tulane to take coaching positions at Tennessee and Georgia Tech, respectively.
Tulane is coming off a 5-7 season after winning two of its last three games. The Green Wave open spring practice March 4.
