AUSTIN, Texas - The 13th-ranked University of Texas women's tennis team dropped its third match of the year on Friday evening with a 5-2 loss to Tulane. The match, which was originally scheduled to be held at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center, was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
"We did some good things today, but I was really dissapointed with our play in doubles," Texas head coach Jeff Moore said. "Our No. 1 doubles team had a huge win, but our other two teams were passive. We have to find a way to get our doubles teams to play with more energy in order to win close matches."
The Longhorns received a big win at No. 1 doubles when sophomores Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) knocked off Maria Ivanov and Julie Smekodub, 8-6. The Green Wave responded by clinching the point when Dorottya Magas and Nancy Kockott topped Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) at the second slot, 8-4, and Daryia Ivanov and Jenny Kuhn knocked off sophomore Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) at the third slot, 8-3.
In singles, Texas received wins from Ruckert and Baritot at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Ruckert cruised to a 7-6, 6-0 decision over Kuhn at the second slot, while Baritot was victorious over Magas, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 position.
