COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Three events at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium and an invitational at the Green Wave's home away from home highlight the 2005-06 Tulane swimming and diving schedule, head coach Daniella Irle announced Monday.
The defending Conference USA swimming and diving team - which joined men's basketball, volleyball, women's soccer and men's and women's tennis at Texas A&M following the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on the New Orleans area - will participate in a total of 13 regular-season events, including dual meets vs. Texas A&M and Arkansas-Little Rock and the inaugural Tulane Diving Invitational at the Reily Center on Tulane's uptown New Orleans campus.
"We had to recreate out fall schedule (due to the hurricane), which is disappointing because we felt it was a good preparation schedule," Irle said. "It ended up being a much more competitive schedule which will make it a little harder in the short term, but better in the long run."
The Green Wave open the season on Saturday, Oct. 22, vs. North Texas in Houston, and will take on their current host, Texas A&M, on Friday, Nov. 4, in College Station, Texas. In addition, Tulane will participate in a dual meet with C-USA newcomer Rice (Nov. 12) in Houston, and compete in the Texas A&M (Nov. 18-20) and Texas (Dec. 1-3) Invitationals during the fall.
Following the team's return to New Orleans for the spring semester, the Green Wave kick off the spring portion of the schedule on Jan. 6-7 with the diving program hosting the Tulane Diving Invitational and the swimmers participating in the Sugar Bowl Swimming Invitational at UNO.
From there, Tulane will battle Ouachita Baptist, Arkansas and Arkansas-Little Rock in Little Rock on Jan. 12, Arkansas in Fayetteville on Jan. 14, Texas A&M at the Reily Center on Jan. 20 and C-USA foe Houston on Jan. 28 in Texas.
The Green Wave will get their first shot at arch-rival LSU on Feb. 3 in Baton Rouge, and close out the regular season at home vs. Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 4.
Tulane will look to defend its C-USA title at the conference championship meet from Feb. 22-25 in Houston, and the postseason begins on March 11-12 at the NCAA Diving Regionals. The swimming championship is slated for March 16-18 in Athens, Ga.
