HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Despite a strong round from senior Liliana Alvarez, the Tulane University women's golf team fell to fifth-seeded USC, 4-1, in the opening round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort. Friday's second round match against Missouri was suspended due to darkness.
Alvarez, a native of Durango, Mexico, picked up the 12th-seeded Green Wave's lone point in the first round, defeating the Trojans' Seiko Onoue, 4 and 2. Freshman Kasi Lee battled but came up just short in her match against Veronica Felibert, 2 and 1. In Tulane's second match of the afternoon, the Green Wave trailed 1-0 before junior All-American Alison Walshe evened the score at one with a 5 and 3 victory over Ellen Hoeper.
Play was suspended due to darkness with Alvarez up one through 14 holes of her match against Mizzou's Maddie Augustsson. Junior Mary Ellen Jacobs trails the Tigers' Stephanie Wavro by two through 14 while freshman Ashley Tait is down four with four holes remaining.
