MANY, La. - Tulane junior Kyle Ritchie fired a two-under par 70 to lead the Tulane men's golf team after the first round of the Battle of the Bend at the Par-72, 6,707-yard Cypress Bend Golf Club.
Ritchie tallied a three-under 33 on the front nine and shot 37 on the back to ended the day in a tie for third place in the individual standings, two shots behind current leader Robert Gwin of Sam Houston State. Junior Michael Thompson and sophomore Andrew Freeman each ended the round at one-over (73) and tied for 16th while Bill Gutknecht and Braden List each carded rounds of 77 to tie for 44th after day one.
"Kyle got off to a really good start and was four under through 10 holes," Tulane coach Tom Shaw said. "He lost a few shots coming in but had a good day striking the ball and had a good command of the game today.
"It was a near-perfect day for golf and the guys probably felt like they could have played a little better. They are anxious to get back out there tomorrow and make up some ground."
Tulane sits in fourth place in the team standings at five-over, trailing cross-town foe UNO by nine strokes. Conference USA newcomer Rice used a four-under day to take control of second while Southeastern Louisiana holds the third spot at four-over.
The Battle of the Bend continues on Tuesday with an 18-hole second round and concludes on Wednesday.
