Through the generosity of noted golf author and Lake Charles trial attorney J. Michael Veron and his wife, Melinda, members of the Green Wave men's and women's golf teams have a new and extremely convenient place to hone the different elements of their short games.
The new Michael and Melinda Veron Short Game Facility, located behind the James Wilson Center adjacent to the Barney Mintz Practice Field, provides Tulane golfers with an on-campus facility for the first time, and enables team members to work on several elements of their short game, including putting, chipping and short wedge shots. The synthetic turf green can replicate putting surfaces at different courses around the country with varied elevations.
"Our student-athletes have a limited amount of spare time, so an on-campus facility gives them the ability to spend that time in actual practice instead of traveling to a course," said Tulane men's golf coach Tom Shaw. "It will enable to focus more time on putting, chipping and short wedge shots, which is a part of the game that really separates the good golf programs from the also-rans. We're very grateful to Mike and his wife Melinda, not only for this new facility, but for their ongoing support of the golf teams."
Veron, who has written three critically-acclaimed fiction books about golf, is a graduate of both Tulane and Harvard Law Schools as well as a successful attorney in Lake Charles. He is also a USGA Committee member and has served as a rules official in USGA competitions. He and his wife, Melinda, have five children.
The Verons were recognized during an afternoon reception in the Hall of Fame Room of the Wilson Center on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 as members of the Tulane men's and women's golf teams, as well as coaches Sue Bower and Tom Shaw, gathered to personally thank the family for their dedication to Tulane Athletics and Tulane Golf.
