With the endowment of a pair of basketball scholarships, former Green Wave basketball letterman the late Stanley W. Ray, Jr. will continue to support his alma mater for many years to come. At halftime of the Green Wave men's basketball game versus TCU on February 23, Tulane University acknowledged the generous contribution of Ray and his family through the Stanley Ray Philanthropic and Civic Trust.
Ray was a standout basketball letterman for the Green Wave who continued to support his alma mater throughout his life. After graduating from Tulane College in 1937 and from Tulane Law School in 1941, Ray served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a radio station owner and one of the founding members of the Metropolitan Bank of Jefferson before his death in 1970. He achieved his success as an athlete and in life despite losing both of his parents at a young age.
The scholarships are being endowed by the Trustees of the Stanley Ray Philanthropic and Civic Trust and will be awarded each year to one student from both the men's and women's basketball teams who demonstrate courage in dealing with adversity. this year's recipients are senior Ivan Pjevcevic of the men's basketball team and sophomore Jami Montagnino of the Green Wave women's squad.
Conrad Meyer IV, a former Green Wave letterwinner and a trustee of the Stanley Ray Philanthropic and Civic Trust, presented the endowment check to Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson, Pjevcevic and Montagnino. A plaque picturing Ray and listing the recipients of the scholarship each year was unveiled and will be hung in Fogelman Arena.
