NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tulane golfers Chris Wheeler and Michael Thompson opened play at the NCAA East Regional Thursday but did not complete the first round of the 54-hole event until Friday morning, thanks to inclement weather in the Nashville area Thursday afternoon. When the first round was completed, Wheeler was tied for 20th after a round of two-under par 69 at the par 71, 6,864-yard Golf Club of Tennessee. Thompson, meanwhile, was one stroke back at one-under 70, putting the sophomore into a tie for 28th place.
Weather delayed the first round by nearly two hours Thursday, leaving six teams and six individuals still on the course as night fell. The golfers endured another delay of more than an hour Friday morning before finally getting out on the course to complete the first 18 holes.
Wheeler, a senior from Allen, Texas playing in his first NCAA postseason event and possibly the last event of his collegiate career, carded four birdies and two bogeys in the first round, including a string of three straight birdies on holes five, six and seven en route to a 69.
Sophomore Thompson endured an up-and-down day with seven birdies and six bogeys, including bogeys on the last two holes (played Friday morning) to finish tied for 28th.
"They both played well," said Tulane Head Coach Tom Shaw. "It was a good solid opening round. They are very comfortable here and they definitely belong in this level of competition."
Thompson and Wheeler teed off for the second round at 10:09 and 10:18 am, respectively. Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com.
